Atman

Toshio Matsumoto JP, 1962, 10', 16 mm

Atman shows a masked girl with long silver hair wearing the ancient Japanese attire called Kimono, sitting on a chair in a forest. The mask with two short horns called Hannya which represents the female demon of jealousy and wrath, has been used at the stage of No drama, a traditional dance to represent the spirit. Even if she never moved at all, incredibly we see very hard and excessive motion of the images on the screen. The impression of excessive motion is constructed with images that had been taken frame by frame. Those images are taken by infrared rays film, and the camera moved up and down or zoomed in and back around her. So it shows very different image from kind of nature, but is not only abstracted image, we may look up something specialized image through the different images in layers closing each other in time, making deconstructed aspect.
