Live audiovisual performance for lasers and cello

In this audiovisual performance, the duo researches the relations between electro-acoustic sound and diffracted light-patterns in a diagonal mixage between the two media. The sonic output consists of a live performance with an extended cello. The output of the instrument is used to create a mass of sound which morphs from a complex noisy environment of fast fragmented textures to a serene and harmonic drone. While an overall collapse of tempo within sound-structures is manifested, the sound of the cello is being revealed. Within the visual domain, shooting laser beams through transparent objects form a meticulous constellation. By doing this an effect known as “speckle pattern” occurs, resulting in abstract landscapes of detailed colour patterns and dynamic evolving shapes.

Yamila Ríos is a Spanish composer, performer and sound artist based in the Netherlands. Her artistic practice deals with the creation of aural spaces. These ephemeral spaces are neither fixed nor constant, which allows them to unfold and change in time. Her pieces consist of multiple textures and masses of sounds, each of them with their own internal and complex activity. Yamila holds a Bachelors and a Masters in Sonology from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.

Joris Strijbos is a Rotterdam-based artist, working in the fields of expanded (live) cinema, audio performances and kinetic-light-installations. He is one of the persons behind Macular, a collective whose focus is mainly on the synesthetic relation and interaction between moving image and sound. With a special interest in organic organisations and structures he nowadays creates computer software to generate visual complexity. These techniques re-appear in his installations, in which he focuses on the creation of emergent systems and their possibilities for audio/visual composition.
