Three historical accounts of Arctic travellers in search of the unknown, dating from 300 BC to the late 19th century told in different shades of white.

(1) The Greek merchant Pytheas was the first to give a written account of an expedition to the Northern Ice Sea. He could hardly find words for what he saw (330 BC).

(2) In search of the North-West passage, the English admiral John Ross reported an encounter with the only inhabitants of the universe (1819).

(3) The Swedish inventor Andree and his partners Strindberg and Fraenkel aspired to be the first to set foot on the North Pole. Their hot air balloon crashed, and they started a long hike home across the land ice (1897).
