Harrachov
Matt Hulse, Joost van Veen UK, 2006, 10', 35 mmCombining live action and stop-frame animation, the short film Harrachov explores the effect of a mysterious, organising force that exerts irresistible power over certain objects and materials. Piece by piece, in near darkness, a kinetic machine-system is assembled and gradually awakens. Finally brought together on screen, a dissonant, eerie “musique concrete” emerges, orchestrated by the object ensemble - the cast and chorus of the film. Extraordinarily, the beast the film creates exists for real beyond the screen, as an impressive, fully-functional kinetic sculpture – The Harrachov Exchange.
