The sly, unexpected humor in this pair of late Brakhage hand-painted films only adds to their visual richness and the dynamic interaction of surface modification with underlying photography. Brakhage’s few 35mm films are a completely different visual experience than his many 16mm masterpieces, offering a startling vividness of form and color due partly to his use of a larger 'canvas'.
