Marianna Christofides Germany, 2022, 12', 16 mm > DCPImages from the former Ravensbrück Women’s Concentration Camp—which served as a principal training center for female guards within the Nazi concentration camp system and where 130,000 women were incarcerated and tortured—are interwoven with a vocal performance by Almut Kühne revealing the permeability of the everyday and its inherent potential of terror. Shot on 16mm ORWO film, the medium’s materiality becomes part of a porous narrative of celluloid production, forced labour and mass extermination. In the tangibility of voice and place, their gaps and voids, a contingent web of forces takes on sensory forms. Rigid patterns of language as a supposedly unambiguous carrier of meaning are here unsettled.
