Restored Weekend
Kirsten Winter, Gerd Gockell DE, CH, 2004, 5', 35 mmSound: Walter Ruttmann Wochende (1930)
A fictitious discovery based on Walter Ruttmann’s audio play Wochende (Weekend) from 1930 – the first ever abstract sound collage. Through our work the more than seventy year-old audio work Weekend by Walter Ruttmann now tells its own story. Fictitiously buried and destroyed, parts of the film have been rediscovered and made partly presentable. Conceived originally as a sound collage with the simultaneous projection of black film, in its "restored" version the film documents the traces of time. The question as to whether Walter Ruttmann ever thought about adding pictures to his sound collage remains open. (Kirsten Winter, Gerd Gockell)
