Back Expanded Cinema 1: Umbráfono

Umbráfono

Enrique del Castillo ES, 40'

Performance by Enrique del Castillo with an optical reader capable of transforming light stimuli that are projected onto a photosensitive cell into sound. This project is based on the optical-analogue reading system used in the cinema since 1919 to interpret the soundtracks that are part of the films.

Enrique del Castillo (Spain, 1982) trained in fine arts at the University of Granada and holds a master’s degree in artistic creation from the University of Barcelona. He has developed his artistic career both in painting and sound art. His interest in celluloid as sound media was sparked through a collaboration with the experimental filmmaker Miguel A. Puertas. Since 2018, his practice has centered on developing and performing with optical readers which transform patterns on film into sound.
