44 Mile Film

Jennifer West US, 2014, 10', SD VIDED

The film follows the 44 miles on Google Maps, which uses aerial photography and marks the trail with a purple line. The new mapping tool is a public image posting bar for individuals to upload their own images. The film uses this format of the personal meeting the map with overlays of the author's own scrolling snapshots of the trip – of the film being dragged and of muddy shoes, morning coffee, the tent. Moments of clarity happen when the filmstrip lines up with the purple trail marker becoming the way to mark that time – as material and as image. The travelogue serves as a foil to muse on image and material memory and my current thoughts on witnessing first hand the transition from analogue to digital film.
