Back Expanded Cinema 3: Luis Macías

The Spectral Mountain

Luis Macías ES, 2026

The Spectral Mountain is an immersive installation that envelops the viewer in a shifting landscape in constant transformation. Through ten 360° panoramic images taken in the Pyrenees, the installation creates a sensory experience, where nature and light merge. Using ten slide projectors arranged in series, the images are projected in a loop onto a circular surface, revealing a mountainous landscape that oscillates and vibrates.

Luis Macías is an artist, filmmaker and image-moving composer. His pieces deal with the formal and spectral properties of the moving image, through the exploration of the cinematographic device itself and the photochemical nature of the medium. Focused on experimental and procedural practices of analogue image, his works in Super 8, 16mm, 35mm and / or video format are composed for projection, performance or installation. His films and pieces of expanded cinema have been shown in prestigious film, art and music festivals as well as art centres, museums and alternative spaces around the world. Co-founder and active member of CRATER-Lab, an independent artist-run-film Lab for analogue cinema.

This performance is part of a series of six analog live performances by Luis Macías, presented across the member festivals of the European Short Film Network throughout 2026. The project is realised in cooperation with THIS IS SHORT and curated with the support of 25 FPS Festival.
