Maarten Visser NL, 1980, 3', 35 mm

A high school teacher of classic languages in Amsterdam, Maarten Visser (1929-2009) developed a special animation technique in his spare time at his home studio and made about 50 films since the early 1960s. Inspired by Roman mosaics and admiring the rhythmic animation work of Fischinger and Norman McLaren, Visser devised an animation technique by shifting mosaic stones to create abstract patterns. John Canemaker, Academy Award winning animator and animation historian, is enthusiastic about the recent discovery of Visser’s films: "Intricate and subtly varied, the patterns, movements and colour of Maarten Visser's animated mosaic stones both mesmerize and sooth. His films bring serene contemplative elegance to cinema's abstract visual poetry."
