Performance for four 16 mm projectors

LAFOXE FR, 2008, 35'

Performers: Etienne Caire, Gaëlle Rouard

Film improvisation duo LAFOXE deals with possibilities of live multi-projection image and sound manipulation on 16mm projectors modified specially for this purpose. The improvisational manipulation background image is generated from 16mm found footage of auditive and visual materials, mainly taken from older Hollywood films, previously subjected to comprehensive laboratory processing. Playing with masking (colouring the negative), overprinting, light intensity variations, tape speed, image framework size, scopic lenses span and gels manipulation, sound synchrony or asynchrony and other numerous possibilities of image processing dismantle the "film" into pieces used to build a new whole during simultaneous projecting. Just like image, sound is also rebuilt by mixing optical sounds from the original film tape recordings. Unlimited improvisational possibilities of playing remind us that conventional narrative mechanism dismantling is only a beginning of immersion into a totality of a different auditorial and cinematographic experience, whose final and ultimate metamorphosis does not occur exclusively within the film. In contrast, we are projected into the very matter of the cinematic process, staring into a spectacular scene of a mobile wide-screen hyperscope
