The Tonsure of the Cross
Željko Kipke Tonzura križa, HR, 1983-1984, 4', SD videoOriginal format: 8 mm
This film is a document of a cross-shaped tonsure on the author's head, shaved by his future wife, holding the scissors and razor in one hand and trying to control the camera trigger with the other. The framing focus is thus never the same – the camera moves unpredictably, giving a certain dynamics to the scene. Evoking magical and archetypal meanings, the tonsure of the cross, achieved by a quotation-based procedure, refers to the historical avant-garde concept reminding of the star-shaped tonsure on Marcel Duchamp's head. The solemn soundtrack is Johann Sebastian Bach's fugue, added subsequently when the film was restored in 2003.
