Free Radicals on HRT 3

Night before the 11th 25 FPS Festival edition kicks off, on 23rd of September at 22:48, Third Program of the Croatian National Television broadcasts Free Radicals - A History of Experimental Film, feature documentary by Pip Chodorov, portraying great filmmakers - Robert Breer, Stan Brakhage, Peter Kubelka, Jonas Mekas, Michael Snow, Ken Jacobs and others.

Touching and personal, this documentary will serve as a guide for all those who are touched by the desire to plunge into this era, taking them for a journey. The “free radicals” of the title are artists that, beginning in the 1920’s and through the 1970’s, have pushed cinema toward experimental visual poetry. ... The film pays worthy homage to this fringe of cinema, too often reduced to a hermetic citadel rather than a space open to the winds, where chance, a do-it-yourself ethic, and humor have often played a large role.

Pip Chodorov was born on April 13, 1965 in New York. He has been involved in filmmaking and music composition since 1972. He studied cognitive science at the University of Rochester, NY and film semiotics at the University of Paris, France. He worked in film distribution – previously Orion Classics, NYC; UGC, Paris; Light Cone, Paris; and, currently, Re:Voir Video, Paris, which he founded in 1994 (www.re-voir.com) and The Film Gallery, the first art gallery devoted exclusively to experimental film (www.film-gallery.org). He is also co-founder of L'Abominable (www.l-abominable.org), a cooperative do-it-yourself film lab in Paris, and the moderator of the internet-based forum on experimental film, FrameWorks.
