Self-Examination Remote Control
Eve Heller US, AT, 1981/2009, 5', 35 mmA fragile Super 8 self-portrait rediscovered on 35mm decades after it was made by a struggling 19-year-old deeply at sea in herself. A fine artist at heart, I likewise found the filmmaking apparatus foreign. So, I threw both into the picture: I filmed with a remote control, exploring shooting speed, focal lengths, lighting, and aurally improvised recordings onto magnetic-striped passages of black to play on my personal quandary. The paradoxical predicament of being both subject and object in myself and the world resulted in a film that represents a perhaps obligatory phase of cinematic narcissism in the early work of an aspiring avant-garde filmmaker.
