End Rolls (2009) is a three-projector film and sound performance made from 16mm colour negative. Inspired by the fluctuations of colour at the beginning and end of a film, rolls of negative were exposed to everyday light sources – such as a cooking stove, candle, and room light – by opening the camera body rather than exposing the film through the lens. As the projectors are never perfectly synchronised, the films echo one another at different moments, creating shifting colours that dance between the screens. Sound is generated directly from the images using light-sensitive diodes.
End Rolls #2 is a digital iteration that adapts this process to the wide screen. Divided into changing compositions, the colour sequences move between synchronisation and displacement as they interact with one another. Light-sensitive diodes capture sound directly from the monitor, presented in stereo. The result is a playful interplay of colour, image and sound within the widescreen.
