Wednesday with International Competition, 'painted films' and a volcanic eruption
Today’s schedule at Kinoteka includes two blocks from the international competition, a selection by the grand jury member Gloria Vilches, and a sensory journey to Krakatoa in the company of Carlos Casas.
The second day opens with Gloria Vilches, a grand jury member, film scholar and coordinator of the Xcèntric programme at the CCCB, at 4 pm with her selection of films that combine painting and cinema – Painted Films and Filmed Paintings. She will present non-canonical artists, painters who film and filmmakers who paint, and their works in which film elements merge with brushstrokes, acrylics, ink and other techniques.
The first section of the international competition, which will be shown at 6 pm, features five film titles gathered under the title ‘Missing Parts’. The theme of missing is treated from different perspectives – absence as a personal and collective lack, as a trigger for creative challenges, as a challenge and a moment of realisation. The filmmaker of Extinctions of Blue, Basile Trouillet, will join us for the screening. Other films in the section include Lover, Lovers, Loving, Love by experimental filmmaker Jodie Mack, the hybrid Placeholder by Jesse McLean, FLIM FLAM by avant-garde author Siegfried A. Fruhauf, and When Flowers Dream of Us by Lebanese director of Armenian origin Robert Minassian.
The second segment of films from the international competition programme, entitled ‘Elsewhere’, awaits us at 8.30 pm. Four visually rich and colourful films will be shown, at the intersection of dream and reality, the unknown and the known, the personal and the collective, always revealing spaces beyond those visible to the eye. After the screening, we will talk with Martin Moolhuijsen, author of Katabasis, and Rachele d’Osualdo & Andrea Trincardi, producers of Anouk Chambaz’s At Night. The same section will feature Élisabeth Caravelle’s enigmatic Métae and Local Sensations, a playful creation by Thai filmmaker Tulapop Saenjaroen.
To end the day, we are bringing you a true audiovisual sensation, the hybrid feature film by Spanish filmmaker Carlos Casas, Krakatoa. The filmmaker takes us on a sensory journey through images, sounds and vibrations recorded and imagined around the eruptions of an Indonesian volcano, one from the late 19th century, the other from the 21st century. Casas takes the sensory possibilities of the film medium to its peak, drawing the audience into his abstract audiovisual environment. The film is scheduled for 11 pm and the director will join us for the screening.
