Friday at the Festival with the final Expanded Cinema performance
Friday opens with a panel on ‘short film circulation paths’ at Studio-gallery Klet, film selections by jury member Alia Syed and Guy Sherwin and Lynn Loo, as well as a competition programme at Kinoteka, and Expanded Cinema with Luis Macías, at the Academy of Fine Arts.
The fourth festival day opens in Klet at 12 pm with the panel Beyond the Festival Circuit: Pathways for the Circulation of Short Films, which will discuss alternative screening spaces, as well as the visibility and accessibility of short films in the contemporary media landscape. The panel is part of the wider international event of the European Short Film Network (ESFN), and will include Vanja Andrijević (Bonobostudio), Jurij Meden (Filmmuseum Wien), Mathieu Janssen (Go Short), Ulrich Ziemons (Berlinale), hosted by Matevž Jerman (Slovenian Cinematheque).
At 4 pm we return to Kinoteka with the Jury’s Choice section, where filmmaker Alia Syed will present her curated programme Under the Dome of a Bruised Sky. In it, she presents his works from the 1980s to the present in a dialogue with contemporary films by Jennifer Lauren Martin and Niki Kohandel, which in interesting ways engage different positions of the subject in the interplay of voice, text and image. They deal with the concealment of gendered and racially determined bodies, hovering somewhere between hypersexualisation and desexualisation, between desire and loss.
Our festival guest, the famous Guy Sherwin, will present the programme Conversations at 6 pm with his long-time collaborator, filmmaker Lynn Loo. After the performance of Washi MM, this is a unique opportunity to get acquainted with their artistic practices, with two of Sherwin’s and two of Loo’s films combining analogue with digital, necessarily speaking about their advantages and disadvantages. End Rolls #2 and Conversations by Lynn Loo will be screened, as well as Animal Studies and Four Films About Music by Guy Sherwin.
The fifth segment from the international competition, 'Present Imperfect', is scheduled for 8.30 pm. It brings together four subversive films that directly confront the problems of today and the remnants of the past, intensively denouncing the colonial and ecocidal tendencies woven into society. We will be joined at the screenings by Youhanna Nagy, the editor of the film Nothing Happens After Your Absence, and Rob Jacobs as one of the members of the Collectif Faire-part, the creative collective behind the film What We Said to Brussels Airlines. Also featured are Ben Russell’s intense journey, Another Earth, and Komtouch Napattaloong’s glitchy exploration, In Sum.
To wrap up the day, we go to the Academy of Fine Arts, where the film artist and motion picture composer Luis Macías will set up his installation with ten slide projectors The Spectral Mountain. It is an immersive installation that uses panoramic images taken in the Pyrenees to create a sensory experience where nature and light merge. His Expanded Cinema performance is scheduled for 10 pm.
