Meet the Jury: Jesse McLean

Jesse McLean places her work in conversation with artists who inspired her to go further and upend her knowns.

Back in 2011, when Magic for Beginners was screened in the competition of the 7th 25 FPS Festival, American filmmaker Jesse McLean won the audience in Zagreb with her idiosyncratic film essays in which popular culture is placed side by side with theories of culture and society.

In her works, McLean explores how technology and the media shape our daily experience, desires and dreams, without avoiding humour or sentimentality. As a member of this year’s jury, McLean included in her selection a dialogue with her cinematic role models, such as the pioneers of hybrid film Arthur Lipsett and Lillian Schwartz, as well as contemporary authors Deborah Stratman and Michael Robinson.
